Hospitality Degree Programs Available at North Central Michigan College

North Central Michigan College offers three programs for students who want to work in the hospitality industry in Michigan and other states. One program allows students to earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Hospitality and Casino Management. It focuses heavily on preparing students for running the casinos that are located in different parts of the state. The program features 12 credits of general education courses and up to 22 credits of hospitality classes. Those classes include Introduction to Business, Microsoft Office for Windows, Principles of Management and Customer Service. Students also receive two credits when they do an internship. They must have a grade point average of at least 2.0 before doing an internship. North Central Michigan College can help students find a position in a popular casino.
The hospitality and casino management program is also available as a certificate program, which asks that students take Business Math, Introduction to Business and other required business and management classes. They can then choose 12 credits of electives to take based on how much experience they have and what they want to do or where they want to work. Food and Beverage Management is a class that goes over how to order new ingredients and supplies based on the market and customer base, while Casino Risk Management looks at the risks found in a casino. This program includes Casino Operations and Management I and II courses also.
Another option for students who want to work in the hospitality industry is the college’s hospitality and hotel certificate of development program. It includes 20 credits of courses that let students show employers that they have the skills needed to work in hotels and resorts. In Introduction to the Hospitality Industry, they get a broad overview of this industry and what professionals do on the job. Hospitality Law and Ethics is another required class, which helps students see some of the legal issues they might face when it comes to hiring new workers or working with hotel guests. The college also requires that they take a class on communications to learn more about communicating with their guests and employees.
About North Central Michigan College
North Central Michigan College is a community college also known as NCMC and North Central Michigan. Founded in 1952, it took three years before the campus had enough work done that it could open for students. The campus originally had only 10 acres of space for students, but the college would slowly acquire more land, which helped the campus grow. Some of the buildings on the campus date back to the 1960s, but it has some buildings that are more modern. The library on the NCMC campus provides students with millions of resources and is home to a conference center that the college uses for special events and guest speakers.
Located in Petoskey, Michigan, NCMC started as a community college designed for students living in the north. It slowly expanded over the years and now sees students applying from other parts of Michigan and nearby states, including Pennsylvania and Ohio. It also operates three extension centers in smaller towns that offer academic opportunities for students. More than 2,300 students attend North Central Michigan each year, which includes students enrolling in both its certificate and degree programs.
North Central Michigan College Accreditation Details
North Central Michigan first received regional accreditation from the organization called the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS) in the 1970s. When that organization became part of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the accreditation transferred to the HLC. This is important for high school students and those who may want to attend another college because it lets them transfer their credits. HLC accreditation also helps students apply for financial aid each year that they’re at the college.
North Central Michigan College Application Requirements
NCMC offers one application for students who want to take college classes while they’re still in high school and a second application for students who finished high school. That second application is the same one that home school students and those with a GED will use. Students who have questions about applying and those who aren’t sure what they need to do can speak to an admissions counselor. NCMC also attends college events hosted at local high schools and can help students apply on the spot or find out more about its degree programs.
The NCMC application features six parts. Students will need to fill out sections about their backgrounds, add their contact information and include details on where they went to school and what they want to study. The application also includes a section that students can fill out to get scholarships from the college. Students can then submit their school transcripts and complete the college assessment. NCMC will accept an official ACT score but requires that students who did not take that test take the COMPASS exam. This determines the placement of the student in various courses and subjects. The college also has an orientation that students will need to do before the semester starts.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Any student who lives in Emmet County will pay $125 per credit hour. The cost increases to students who live in other counties in Michigan to $207 per credit hour. Students who do not live in Michigan pay $269 per credit hour. Students also pay $8.50 per credit hour for their technology, registration and student success fees. The college also charges an activity fee of $1.50 per credit hour that it will max out at $22.50 per semester.
The Pell grant is just one type of financial aid available for students who use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This grant goes to students enrolled at least half-time in a college or university program. Other types of financial aid granted to incoming students include subsidized loans and supplemental grants. The Michigan Tuition Incentive Program also provides financial help to students who are under the age of 20 and have a high school diploma or GED. This award applies to both their tuition and fees.
