New River Community and Technical Colleges offers an Associate of Applied Science in Hospitality and Tourism Management. The degree program is designed for students wanting to work in recreation, tourism, hospitality, and leisure fields. The curriculum is made up of general education and business support classes and knowledge and skills-based courses in tourism management, hospitality, and marketing. The combination of knowledge, skills, and experience in the AAS in Hospitality and Tourism Management will allow the customer service oriented, hardworking student to pursue a lucrative and successful career in the constantly expanding tourism industry. A total of 60 credit hours are needed for completion of the degree.
The required courses include Intro to Hospitality Management, Lodging Management, Supervision Management and Team Lead, Customer Contact Skills, Managing Tourism Resource, Tourism Motivation and Behavior, Inclusive Service and Recreation Tourism, Conventions, Meetings, and Event Planning, Hospitality and Tour Policy and Strategy, Hospitality Marketing, and Crisis Management. After completion of the program, students have the ability to explain the interdependent parts of the hospitality and tourism industry, such as customer service, food service, lodging, transportation, recreation management, and marketing and sales.
About New River Community and Technical College
New River Community and Technical College is a public two-year institution of higher learning located in Beaver, West Virginia. It was established in 2003 by the West Virginia Legislature. It was made up of the former parts of Bluefield State and Glenville State Colleges. New River Community and Technical College was named after New River, which is one of the oldest rivers in the world. The river flows through the service area of the college. New River Community and Technical College first gained regional accreditation in 2005. It serves nine counties in south central and southeast West Virginia, including Webster, Raleigh, Summers, Pocahontas, Fayette, Mercer, Greenbriar, Monroe, and Nicholas. The college is made up of four campuses: Greenbriar Valley Campus, Nicholas County Campus, Mercer County Campus, and Raleigh County Campus. More than 3,000 students call New River Community and Technical College home. The college operates on the semester-based academic calendar.

Federal Work Study
The Federal Work Study is a financial aid program that enables students to work on or off-campus to earn money to pay for higher education. The off-campus positions must be specially approved by the program. Students can work up to 20 hours per week while enrolled in classes. Students must be enrolled at least half-time to qualify for the program. The pay varies by specific circumstances, but students make no less than the current federal minimum wage.
