At UM, the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater Management provides students with mentor-style training in management and production as well as hands-on experience at the University of Miami Jerry Herman Ring Theatre, the on-campus theatre for the University. Experience includes house managing, box office sales, marketing and operations related to the business of theater. In addition, instruction is provided in various business software applications used in theater management, including desktop publishing, box office ticketing, spreadsheets, database management and word processing.
There are six courses included with a focus in theater management. Students extensively study Broadway and Regional Theater as well as fundraising, grant writing, marketing, organizational structure, personnel and facility management. Additional courses beyond the major include stagecraft, directing, script analysis and theater history.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Stage Management provides students with mentor training from experienced Actors Equity Association Stage Managers. They receive hands-on experience at the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre as well as a smaller studio theater. Those in the program are able to observe professional stage managers working behind the scenes of Broadway, Off-Broadway and Touring productions along with dance and opera companies.
Courses include stage management, design, directing and theater management. Electives help students individualize their studies to meet their own talents and interest. Graduates have found positions on Broadway, Off-Broadway, regional theater, opera and professional touring productions.
The Master of Arts in Arts Presenting and Live Entertainment Management (AP Live) Online can be completed in 18 months and prepares graduates for producing and promoting live entertainment performances.
About the University of Miami
In 1925, a land boom at its peak led a group of citizens to determine that there was a need for an institute of higher learning in Miami. It was believed that the new school would provide an opportunity for creative work in the arts as well as extensive research in the tropics. However, the land boom collapsed the following year, just when the new school opened. What was not known was that the economic issues in Florida were simply a prelude to a larger economic collapse throughout the country. In 1926, a devastating hurricane struck the area, further placing the school in financial difficulty.
It was the persistence of the first president of the University, Dr. Bowman F. Ashe, that kept the school operational during these lean financial times. Dr. Ashe kept the school open despite bankruptcy, reorganization, and two world wars. Initially, the school had only two divisions, the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Music. It also had a night school and the School of Law was established in 1928. The School of Business Administration and the School of Education opened in 1929 with graduate studies added in 1941.
The Marine Laboratory opened in 1942, the School of Engineering in 1947 and the School of Medicine in 1952. Today, there are more than 16,700 students enrolled at the University of Miami. It is ranked in the top 50 colleges in the country by U.S. News & World Report and the publication highly ranks several of the graduate programs at the University.

The University of Miami is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Periodically, the Association reviews the University to confirm that they continue to meet or exceed criteria set forth by the University. University of Miami Application Requirements
First-time students must complete the Common Application and provide official high school transcripts along with official ACT or SAT scores. A school report is also required along with a letter of recommendation. Depending on the program the student wishes to enter, other application requirements may be necessary such as auditions or portfolios. Applicants are encouraged to contact an admissions counselor prior to submitting their application.
Transfer students must complete the Common Application and provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Applicants must provide a Registrar/College Report along with their letter of recommendation. Any applicant with less than 30 transfer credits must also provide official high school transcripts along with ACT or SAT scores.
Each graduate program at the University of Miami has its own admission requirements. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher before applying and provide transcripts from all colleges or universities attended. Letters of recommendation along with official GRE, LSAT, MCAT or GMAT scores are also required.
The University of Miami Tuition and Financial Aid
Full-time undergraduate tuition is $50,400 per year. Tuition for graduate programs varies depending on the program. Financial aid is available and students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which must be renewed each year. Even students who feel they do not qualify for aid should complete the FAFSA as there is aid that may be based on merit.
Financial aid may be offered in the form of gift aid like grants and scholarships which do not require repayment after graduation. Work-study programs are also available which provide employment to offset the cost of tuition. Loans are also offered but must be repaid upon graduation. The University of Miami also accepts employer, military and veteran benefits.
Although the University of Miami does not offer a traditional hospitality management degree, they do offer degrees in theater and stage management. These types of positions are part of the tourism industry which falls in line with hospitality. The University of Miami only offers these positions on campus although there may be some required courses that are available in online formats.
